    Supported Boards

Aircast OS ships for three boards. The Raspberry Pi is the default, and the rest of these docs assume one. The Orange Pi 5 and Radxa ROCK 5B run the same Aircast software and are in beta.

    What is the same

Every board runs the same Aircast software, so the dashboard and the guides in these docs work the same way:

    • The software stack: aircastd, aircast-streamer, mediamtx, Tailscale and wfb-ng for packet radio.
    • The read-only root with a data overlay, and the optional disk encryption with Tang or Aircast Cloud unlock.
    • The defaults: user pi and hostname aircast.
    • First-boot settings: cloud-init lives on the FAT bootfs partition, so the Wi-Fi, hostname, SSH and Tailscale settings you set in the Flasher apply the same way.

    What differs

    • No onboard Wi-Fi. The base Orange Pi 5 and ROCK 5B have no Wi-Fi, so it needs a USB adapter. Ethernet and cellular modems work as on the Pi. Without an adapter, use Ethernet for the first boot.
    • How the image is built. The Rockchip images come from the aircast-armbian repo, which uses the Armbian build framework: Debian 13 "trixie" and mainline Linux 6.18. The rtl8812au driver that wfb-ng uses is built for that kernel.
    • Release line. Their first release is v0.4.0-beta.3, a prerelease. Each board has its own list of releases.

    Flash a board

In the Aircast Flasher, the Operating system step has a Board picker. Pick Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi 5 or Radxa ROCK 5B, and the list below it shows that board's releases. The Flasher remembers the board and shows it in the summary before it writes.

The CLI takes the same choice as --board on releases, download and flash. It defaults to rpi. The MCP tools take board.

    aircast-flasher-cli releases --board orangepi5
    aircast-flasher-cli flash --disk /dev/disk4 --board orangepi5 --hostname falcon-01

If your Flasher has no Board picker yet, download the board's image from Releases and pick it with Use custom .img.

Flash your Pi in about 5 minutes

The Aircast Flasher downloads the image, sets Wi-Fi and hostname, and verifies the card.
